Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

With the continual rise in medical costs, most folks who are 65 years old and eligible for Medicare simply can’t afford to go uninsured or underinsured. A Medicare supplement, also known as Medigap, is a type of private insurance that helps folks who have Medicare pay for some of their “out-of-pocket” expenses such as coinsurance, co-payments or deductibles that the original Medicare policy doesn’t cover. A Medicare supplement only works in conjunction with a Medicare policy. Michael Higgins would like to remind you that a husband and wife must each buy separate Medicare supplement policies. One spouse’s Medicare supplement policy won’t cover any health care costs of the other spouse.

For Arizona residents, you are eligible to apply for Medicare supplement (Medigap) coverage if you are 65 years of age or older, enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B, and meet residence requirements.

Although Medicare supplement offerings have been standardized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services into twelve different plans, labeled A through L, these plans are sold and administered by private companies, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. Each Medicare supplement or Medigap plan offers a different combination of benefits, and prices can differ from company to company.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of AZ offers two main choices of Medicare supplement (Medigap) plans to Arizona residents who are 65 years of age or older and enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B.

• Senior Security
  
  Arizona Senior Security applicants must have residency in the state.
  
  The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Senior Security has four coverage options with Medigap plans A, C, F and H. The Senior Security Plans from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona offer the most flexibility and choice for the consumer. There are no "lock-in" provisions and no "service area" restrictions as are found in Medicare HMO plans. Another convenience is having full Medicare supplemental insurance coverage while traveling throughout the United States. You have the complete freedom to see any Medicare participating doctor or a specialist whenever and wherever the need arises.
  
  

• Senior Preferred Medicare Select
  
  Senior Preferred Medicare Select is available at this time for only residents of Pinal, Maricopa and Pima counties.
  
  With two coverage options with Medigap (Medicare supplement) plans C and H, the Senior Preferred Medicare Select plan offers lower monthly premiums than the Senior Security plan, but requires that you use physicians and hospitals in the BCBSAZ Senior Preferred Medicare Select provider network. The exception is in cases of emergencies when the requirement is waived. Since there are over 11,000 providers in the Senior Preferred network in Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal counties and more joining, there are ample choices in primary care physicians and specialists. You have the freedom to choose any Senior Preferred physician you want to see and are not required to go through a primary care physician gatekeeper. Using network providers means lower out-of-pocket costs and higher savings on premiums.
  
  

No Waiting Period
Other Medicare supplement plans may make you wait for coverage, but with Blue Cross® Blue Shield® of Arizona Senior Security or Senior Preferred Medicare Select you have no waiting period for pre-existing conditions although Medical underwriting may be required.
